Holmer Green 2 Tokyngton Manor 1
Holmer leapfrogged Bedford Town to top the league with this
result. Not surprisingly, for a team managed by Shayne Chandler,
the Wembley-based opponents made the Greens work extremely hard
for the three points. Indeed Charlie Fanner in goal had to be on
top form to keep Manor at bay, as they continually threatened
with their huge strike pairing of Boateng and Simpson. In the
drizzle, Holmer took the lead on 17 minutes as a long ball from
captain Jack Dixon bounced over the Tokyngton keeper. Andy
Shed read the situation perfectly and reacted before any other
defender could intercept. But just two minutes later from a
right-wing free-kick, Boateng out-jumped the defence. Fanner
managed to deflect the ball onto the bar, but it bounced down
straight to Melford Simpson who tapped in for the leveller. The
Greens regained the lead with what proved to be the decisive goal
on 27 minutes Shed crossed from the left for Jonny Mason to head
goal-wards. The keeper could not hold the greasy ball and
Simon Williams was on the spot in an instant. He lifted the ball
over the prostrate custodian into the roof of the net.
Shed shot wide from two further chances before the break, and
Gary Finch also went close with a long range shot.
HT 2-1
The drizzle increased in the second half, and Holmer patiently
tried to get the third. But Tokygton dug in, and received a
couple of further cautions for their troubles. But it was
certainly not a case of playing out time for Holmer, who sent on
Jamie Hunt for the final fifteen minutes. Immediately the tall
striker got behind the visitors defence but shot across the
goal. Shed got away once again, but chose the wrong option and
was closed down.
But during this period Fanner was required to make two excellent
low saves as Manor never gave up striving for a point at least.

League Challenge Trophy, Round Three
Holmer Green 1 London Colney 2
Its bad enough conceding one goal in the 48th minute of the
first half, and another, the winner, in the 91st. But with the
winner scored by a former player, and having played for over an
hour with a man short, we certainly shot ourselves in the foot
this week. From early we put in unnecessary, ridiculous, tackles.
First Jack Dixon upended an opponent, and then Gary Finch did the
same on 10 minutes. The referee set out a marker at this point
with the first caution of the evening. Jacko didnt get the
message. Further similar fouls by Dixon on 15 and 19 minutes,
resulted in first a yellow card and then a second. Really uphill
now? At first it looked as though London Colney would go on to
win comfortably. But the remaining ten Greens showed great
resolution until they appeared to be undone in the 44th minute. A
shot went uncharacteristically straight through Charlie Fanner.
But the reason became immediately apparent because the
Assistants flag was raised because a forward had been
directly in front of Fanner in an offside position. However the
reprieve didnt last long as in the third minute of stoppage
time a simple through ball was not covered and Frankie Jowle
opened the scoring. HT 0-1 Holmer sacrificed Simon Williams for
Andy Goddard at the start of the second period, and gradually
forced their way back into the game. Johnny Mason was injured and
replaced by Stevie Groves with 20 minutes to go, and Jamie Hunt
was sent on for Dave Allen who seemed to have belatedly caught
the Dixon/Finch syndrome. On 78 minutes Holmer were very much
back in the game. Ian Robertson got in between the defence and
keeper to glance home a Jay Gould free-kick from the left.
Hunt then wriggled his way in from the right but was crowded out
in the six-yard box. Finch, back at his best since the sending
off, arrived at the far post for a corner and headed firmly down.
However the ball struck a defender on the line and was cleared at
the second attempt. But as the game entered stoppage time again,
former-Green Gary Simmonds pounced on a loose ball in the Holmer
area and guided the ball home.

Amersham Town 0 Holmer Green 1
Holmer took all three points in keenly contested local
derby on a very good pitch, but with a difficult strong wind
blowing mainly into the stand and also towards the clubhouse.
Both sides played better into the wind, and The Greens came out
on top partly due to having three lively forwards, as opposed to
the home side which generally relied solely on the impressive
Tobi Akin. Into the wind from the start, Holmer went close
through Jamie Hunt, before all three forwards combined to fashion
the goal. Hunt crossed from the right to Jonny Mason at the far
post. Masons precise downward header was firmly driven into
the right side of the net by Andy Shed. Holmer created much more
than Amersham during the first period but found home keeper
Alvin Pickering in fine form throughout. The aforementioned Akin,
gave Holmer one scare on 35 minutes turning smartly, when not for
once well-marshalled by Jack Dixon or Ian Robertson, and shooting
just wide from 20 yards out. With Former Holmer players Andy
Wheeler-King, Luke Harman, and Andy Parry playing for Amersham a
keen game was witnessed by a healthy crowd.
HT 0-1
Amersham made the first substitution withdrawing a midfielder and
sending on a centre half on the hour. A Mason shot for Holmer was
too straight. With 15 minutes left Town sent on another forward,
and the Greens responded by replacing Mason with Simon Williams.
Yet another big forward was sent on by the home team, as they
realised it was not going to be Akins day. Andy Goddard
replaced Dave Allen to counter this move, and Holmer were
relieved to see the Assistants flag go up in their favour
for a tight off-side. But there was still time for Pickering to
show his ability, as he fell smartly on a near post corner right
at the end to deny Holmer a second goal.

Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup, Round 2
Holmer Green 1 Bletchley Manor 0
Holmer progressed to the last 32 with this apparently narrow win.
The game itself was totally dominated by the Greens, but they
were unable to turn their territorial persistence into goals.
Hopefully they are saving these for the League games? After 10
minutes Jamie Hunt was denied by the visitors keeper,
Jamie Lands who went on to have a fine game. A Jack Dixon header
from a Jay Gould corner, was well saved, and Andy Shed missed the
target when he should have done better. Shed then managed to
prevent a Dixon shot crossing the Bletchley line. Half-time
arrived with no goals despite virtually 45 minutes of
wind-assisted attacking.
HT 0-0
Against the wind in the second period, Holmer again dominated,
with Manor limited to breaking out aided by that strong wind. But
generally they could not get enough men forward to embarrass a
very patient Greens rearguard. Lands saved from Gould,
before Hunt settled the tie just after the hour mark. He
capitalised on a dodgy piece of control by a Bletchley defender,
and rounded the keeper to shoot home. Jonny Mason was next
to test the keeper cutting in from the left, and
Sheds shot was too straight. Simon Williams replaced Hunt
and Dave Keenan came on for Gary Finch, but a further goal would
not come. The main threat of extra-time came from a Bletchley
breakaway, which Charlie Fanner dealt with.
Supporters, having been spoiled by the free-scoring Greens at
home this season, witnessed a patient, and controlled performance
by Holmer who must be wondering how they did not score more in a
very cleanly contested game against first-time visitors to
Watchet Lane.
